Key figures here are the German theorist Wolfgang Iser (b. 1926) and the American Stanley Fish (b. 1938). Lacanian-inspired critics are likely to be most interested in works that self-consciously challenge the Symbolic world in some way – as Surrealism manifestly does with its reliance on dream imagery and the unconscious.
