Example text

It was more the prisoners – or in this case the adolescents – who policed each other through visual surveillance and incessant oral dialogue. Almost all the girls described discussions at school about body image as commonplace and pervasive. The pursuit of body validation from peers was an issue that was raised time and time again. Scrutinising one another in order to assign validation happened on a daily basis in their school environments. Girls never stop talking about what people look like. It’s the one thing that’s always a topic of conversation.

They have broad shoulders and they look strong. You’ll always want to be strong and muscles make you look kind of tough and like you have a strong arm if you wanted to hit someone. You wouldn’t want to fight but if someone wanted to fight you, looking so strong might put them off. Girls would want a fella that’s big and strong too. (Josh, 13) When the boys evaluated the men’s bodies in the magazine, they did so on the basis of what having this body would mean in everyday life. They tried to gauge whether it would be enabling in their local settings or validated by peers.

Their localised interactions. Importantly, a particular body image is not validated simply because it adheres to structurally imposed discourses, but because these discourses present adolescents with enabling possibilities. Hence, the body is validated because it is enabling to individual social pursuits on a localised level. The body most referred to by these youths took the form of what I call the aesthetic-athletic body. It is beautiful and charming, trim and toned. This is the body form that appears to dominate ideals of masculinity and femininity in popular press.
